Last weekend I went with some friends to my first Australian Football League match (also called AFL, Aussie Rules, or Footy). This was a great experience and I have to admit that I like this sport more than Rugby League or Rugby Union. The match was between the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne Kangaroos.

The objective of AFL is to score points by kicking the ball through the opponents goal. There are four, tall goals posts on each side of the field. If you kick the ball through the middle posts (doesn't matter if the ball bounces or travels through the air) your team will get 6 points; outside posts get you 1 point.
The field is huge!A NFL field would fit inside this field with room to spare. |

In order to pass the ball to a team mate you must either kick it with your foot or punch it with your hand (you cannot throw the ball like a quarterback). When a player runs, he must bounce the ball on the ground at least once every 15 yards, all while avoiding tackle by the opponent. If a player can kick the ball to another team mate and that team mate can catch it in the air (must travel at least 10 yards) the team will get a free kick. This means the defender must back off and give space to the player who caught it. Free kicks are punted and make for great scoring opportunities.
It was a great game and the Brisbane Lions won! See video below to see highlights from the game.
Rotary Fun Run
I recently participated in a 5K Rotary Fun Run. This Fun Run has taken place over the last 10 years and raises an estimated $40,000 each time. All the money raised goes towards supporting various community projects (Wesley Hospital Choices Program, ROMAC, Beef Bank). It was a lot of fun.
This is my friend Antonia. She was brave enough to wake up and run with me. |
I have two more weeks of school and then final exams so I will stay pretty busy over the next few weeks. Have a good day!
