Weather, Mexican food, Rotary

Weather
Well it’s officially the winter season in Brisbane. This period of cooler weather will last from June-August with temperatures between 49-70°F. This doesn’t sound too bad but I still find myself cold at night as we do not use heat in our house.

Breakdown of seasons in Brisbane:
Summer: December – February (68-82°F)
Autumn: March – May (59-77°F)
Winter:   June – August (52-70°F)
Spring: September- November (59-77°F)

Tornados on the water (otherwise known as water spouts)
With all the tornado outbreaks that have been occurring in the States, it’s interesting to discuss what happened in Australia last week. If you look at the video below you will see three different water spouts that formed off the coast of Sydney from one storm system. This is not a common event so it made the news and frightened many people.

Mexican Food
I ate Mexican food for the first time in five months and have to say it was quite strange and rather disappointing. Why strange you ask? Well, there were no Mexicans, no queso, and no unlimited chips. When we first sat down the waitress brought out a tiny bowl of chips which I consumed in under three minutes. I then asked for more chips only to be told, "That will cost you extra."  So sad.

As for the quality of the food, well it just wasn't that good. John liked it but he rarely eats Mexican food so he doesn't count as a judge.

John also ordered buffalo wings for an appetizer. I should have said, "no, were at a Mexican restaurant." But he really wanted them.

Rotary
I gave another talk this last week to the Rotary Club of Albion.
The club consists of around 18 members. They were all very nice and hospitable.

I have really enjoyed giving these Rotary club speeches. In the speech I basically talk a little bit about myself, the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship program and Mississippi culture. Most people find it very interesting and ask a lot of questions afterward.  I also give a BB King CD away to the person who can locate Mississippi on a map or name a famous person from there.

It was difficult at the beginning of the year to schedule speeches but has become much easier as I have developed more relationships with Rotary and its network of people After giving some speeches, clubs have passed my name around to others and this has been very helpful. I am required to give 12-15 talks during my scholarship period but hope to go beyond that number. By the end of August I will have completed 10 talks. I am currently emailing other clubs to schedule speeches for next semester.
