When I arrived in Australia I went straight to Melbourne for the Australian Open. During one of the evening matches at Rod Laver Arena I made my way to some seats that weren't mine in order to get a close up picture of some of the players. If I was told to leave I would, but if I wasn't then I would just sit there until someone claimed the seat. After about five minutes of sitting there this guy came close and said I was in his seat. He seemed pretty relaxed and nice about it so I just moved down to the open seat next to me. As I was sitting there, I noticed a lot of cameras flashing over to the far left in another section. I spotted this big guy, with blonde hair, who seemed to be the center of all the attention. I didn't recognize him so I asked this guy next to me who he was:
Me: "Excuse me. Who is that over there?"
The Guy: "That's Shane Warne mate." (click on name if you would like to know who he is)
Me: "Who's Shane Warne?"
The Guy: "Haha, you must not be from around here."
Me: "I am from the States. My name is Morgan."
The Guy: "Cool. I'm Andy."
Me: "Nice to meet you." *handshake*
.........conversation continues for a while until another person comes to claim my seat. Perhaps someone famous? I never found out (they weren't as nice as Andy was when it came to me being in their seat).
So believe it or not, one of the very first Australians I met when I arrived in Melbourne was Andy Lee from the Hamish and Andy show. The funny thing about this? I didn't know who he was until I saw him on TV a few weeks later. My housemates and I were casually watching TV when he came on. I said, "I met that guy," to which all my housemates responded, "You met Andy!"
To put this story into perspective for my American friends, this might be similar to an Australian coming to a sporting event and having them sit next to Bill Engvall, Dane Cook, or Daniel Tosh only to ask one of them, "Whose that guy over there?" And that 'guy over there' being Roger Clemens or Joe Montana. Anyway, here's me officially introducing you to some of their funny stuff. Hamish was sitting next to Andy but I never met him.
GHOSTING
3 STEP HIDING
CRYING
I bought a Boomerang a few weeks ago and tried to throw it for the first time yesterday. When I bought the boomerang it had a sticker on it that said, "Flight Tested. Warning! This boomerang will return." Well, I nearly knocked myself out the first time I threw it as I didn't realize it would return at such a fast and dangerous speed. I guess that's why its more of a weapon than a toy. I didn't throw it much after that as I was sort of scared. I will practice some more but will choose a day that is not as windy.
What do you call a boomerang that doesn't return? A stick. |
Exchange Rate
When I received the Rotary scholarship the US dollar compared to the Australian dollar was pretty even. Things have changed since that summer of 2009. The current exchange rate is 1.00 AUD = 1.04410 USD
Not a bad time for Australians to travel to America but not the other way around.
Bananas
-Morgan, when's the last time you had a banana?
Thanks for asking as its been nearly 6 months.
-Why is that?
Well in February Cyclone Yasi hit northern Queensland which supplies 90% of Australia's banana production. Therefore they are very expensive!
I can eat a banana if I want too, but it will cost me around $2 per banana.
$14.98 per kg is $33.252 per lb |
Rotary
Last weekend I was able to help the Rotary Club of Nundah with a sausage sizzle fund raiser. The sausage sizzle took place at a car boot sale. What's a car boot sale? Well, its like a garage sale except you sale your items out of the back of your car. Everyone drives to one place, opens up their trunks (or car boots), and sales their items. Not a bad idea huh? I bought 10 John Grisham books for a great price and will give them away as gifts at my future Rotary club presentations. I ran out of B.B. King CD's.
Have a good week!
