Australia is divided into six different states. I am in Queensland in a city called Brisbane. |
For your information: Australia and America are just about the same size. |
As I mentioned in my previous blog post, the Queensland region of Australia has been experiencing major flooding. At least 70 towns and over 3.1 million people have been affected. The damage is estimated to be around five billion dollars. Thirty five people have been killed and nine are still missing. The flooding was caused by excessive rain brought on by a cyclone named Tasha.
Brisbane had its scare with the water about a week and half ago when the Brisbane river, which runs directly through the city, began to flood. Luckily, the house I am staying at did not get hit. Things are fine in Brisbane now but there is a lot of clean up being done in the areas that were hit. Look below..
The water got pretty close to my house. |
What Queensland is experiencing now can be closely related to what we experienced with Katrina, but there is more bad news on the way. Another cyclone named Yasi has formed off the coast of Northern Queensland and is expected to make landfall on Thursday. It is being said on the news that this cyclone might be the largest one to ever hit Queensland.
Here comes Yasi. |
