Brisbane (pronounced Briz-ben)

Brisbane is the capitol city of Queensland and is the third most populous city in Australia (behind Sydney and Melbourne). The population of Brisbane is 2,004,262, so it's about 930,000 people short of equaling Mississippi's population of 2,938,618. The Brisbanites I have met, so far, have been very friendly and are always interested in asking me where I am from as soon as I open my mouth. Yes, I have been picked on a few times for my accent but I sort of expected that. If an Australian guy came to Mississippi, I am sure we would joke around with him about his accent. So it's all fair.

The city glows at night and reflects off the Brisbane river.
I have been in Brisbane for about two weeks now and have really enjoyed it. The city is not too big and its not too small so that's nice. It's also very easy to get around with the public transportation. To get to my university I take a bus and to get into the city I take a train. Also, my house is in a very convenient location as it is only a a five minute walk to both the train station and bus stop. I have not had the opportunity to ride the city boats (called City Cats) because the river flooded last month and many of the City Cat pontoons were destroyed. Hopefully they will be back in working order soon.

My first experience on this bus was not a good one. I had been waiting at the bus stop in the pouring rain (no umbrella or cover over my head) for about three minutes when I spotted the bus approaching to save me from the downpour. As it got closer I noticed it was not slowing down. Sure enough it sped straight pass me. Apparently, you have to raise your hand to signal you would like a ride. I learned the hard way and waited in the rain for another 15 minutes.

These trains are fast and always on time. Be sure to 'mind the gap' and stay behind the yellow line!

This is the City Cat which I hope to ride soon. Some are operating again but there are not any close to where I live.
I took my first trip into the CBD (central business district) last night and it was very entertaining and lively. There are tons of malls, bars, restaurants, and live music. My house mate, Kyle, and I walked around the CBD for a while before returning back home. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to going back.

Sorry this isn't very scenic.

My first picture with some kangaroo's. Too bad their statues.
